Abstract Art is any art which contains no figurative or representational content. True abstract paintings are composed only of shapes and colours. Modern abstract art is an attempt to convey a mood through the use of colour, shape and sometimes texture. The story of abstract art began in the 1920's with Kandinsky and Mondrian. Many European painters of abstract art settled in America where New York became the Mecca of modern abstract art.

In everyday living the terms "modern" and "contemporary" can be used to mean the same thing. But in the Art World these terms are quite distinct so it is worth knowing that the term Modern Art is different from Contemporary Art.
A simple guide to the difference is:
Modern Art includes paintings from the 1880's until the 1970's. The period includes work by such modern greats as Picasso, Monet, Mondrian, Gauguin and Kandinsky.
Contemporary Art includes paintings from the 1970's until now. It is art that has been, and continues to be, created during our lifetime regardless of the style of the art.
